SPECIAL EDUCATIONThe special education program at AFNORTH International School offers a wide range of services for students ages 3 to 21, with Mild to Severe special needs. The emphasis is on "inclusion" in the regular classroom environment, to the maximum extent possible. Special education service providers and their paraeducators collaborate and co-teach with classroom teachers at all grade levels. This collaboration includes the preschool population; i.e., AFNORTH has the distinct advantage of having an International Year 1 program or preschool program for four-year old children, which allows special needs preschool students opportunities for early mainstreaming. In addition, the PSCD and HS special education programs serve the Geilenkirchen (Germany) and Kleine Brogel (Belgium) communities. The following programs are offered:
The Learning Impaired program provides instruction for students with mild to severe disabilities, who have been declared eligible for special education under the DoDDS criteria for the following: information processing disorders, communication impairments, intellectual deficits, physical/health impairments, and/or emotional impairments.
An individual education plan (IEP) is developed for each student prior to placement in the program. Services may be delivered through a pull-out, co-teaching, monitoring and/or consultation program.
The Preschool Children with Disabilities (PSCD) program provides services to students ages 3 through 5 who have been declared eligible for special education services under DoDDS Category E (Developmental Delay). This includes students with a 20% to 25 % delay in one or more of the following areas: adaptive/self-help physical; communication; cognitive; and/or social/emotional. Students placed in this program must have an IEP developed prior to placement in the program.
The Communications Impaired program provides instruction for children with communication disabilities who are eligible for special education under DoDDS Category C (Communication Impaired). This includes students with articulation, dysfluency, voice and/or language impairments. Students requiring services from the teacher of the Communication Impaired must meet the criteria for the specific area of concern (for example, the required number of misarticulated phonemes according to chronological age) as well as documentation that the communciation disability interferes with educational performance. An Individual Education Plan is required for each student prior to placement in the program.
