Course Description: (18 weeks)
The
health course is designed to help all students develop health habits and
attitudes that will last a lifetime.
Students are motivated to become responsible for their own health as
they learn the connection between establishing good health habits now and
enjoying their lives in the future.
Up-to-date information is included in nine content health areas: growth
and development, exercise and fitness, substance use and abuse, food and
nutrition, family, disease and disorders, communication and safety.
The
use of visual aids, videos, cassettes and guest speakers will enhance student
learning.
Some

Multiple assessment strategies are used to enable
students to develop their health-related knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
These include written classwork, tests, group discussions and debates,
educational games, and group activities.
Tests/Quizzes 40%
Classwork/Homework 35%
Total 100%
A final exam will be worth
20% of the student’s semester grade.
Homework / Make-up work Policy:
Students are expected to have their work complete
before entering the classroom. Work
should be completed on regular paper in blue or black pen and labeled with
first and last name as well as period number.
Answers should be thought out, age appropriate and written in complete
sentences. The 6+1 Trait model will be
used to assess writing skills. Late work will receive a penalty of 10% off for
each school day that it is late.
Continuous School Progress:
Success of all students requires that the 6 + 1 Trait
become a consistent and integral component of each course taught at AFNORTH
International Middle/High School. In
Health class, students will be graded on the Conventions trait. Conventions are the mechanical
correctness of the piece–spelling, grammar and usage, paragraphing (indenting
at the appropriate spots), use of capitals, and punctuation. To assess a piece
for convention, ask yourself: "How much work would a copy editor
need to do to prepare the piece for publication?"
