Course Description: (18 weeks)
This required course is designed to help high school
students extend their conceptualization of knowledge, attitudes, and skills
related to health education.
Instruction is based on the needs, interests, strengths, and culture of
AFNORTH high school students. The focus is on students dealing with the world
today and preparing for adult living based on a wellness ethic. Developmentally
appropriate concepts of personal and community health, safety, mental health,
substance abuse, family life and human sexuality are taught in this course. Some of the topics taught will be of a
sensitive nature. Responses will be
given in a straightforward, factual manner with respect for individuals always
being a top priority. Ultimately,
parents are viewed as the primary health educators. Along with community
resources, parents are encouraged to be partners in the school-based health
education program.

Homework / Make-up work Policy:
Students are expected to have their work complete
before entering the classroom. Work
should be completed on regular paper in blue or black pen and labeled with
first and last name as well as period number.
Answers should be thought out, age appropriate and written in complete
sentences. The 6+1 Trait model will be
used to assess writing skills. Late work will receive a penalty of 10% off for
each school day that it is late.
Continuous School Progress:
Success of all students requires that the 6 + 1 Trait
become a consistent and integral component of each course taught at AFNORTH
International Middle/High School. In
Health class, students will be graded on the Conventions trait. Conventions are the mechanical
correctness of the piece–spelling, grammar and usage, paragraphing (indenting
at the appropriate spots), use of capitals, and punctuation. To assess a piece for convention, ask
yourself: "How much work would a copy editor need to do to prepare the
piece for publication?"
