COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Peer Mentoring experience, a component of the Middle School Exploratory wheel, is a 9-week rotation which will allow the students the opportunity to work with younger students in a helping and guiding role and give them a glimpse into the different tasks involved in teaching.  It will also give them an insight and better understanding and appreciation of the particular age group of children they have chosen to mentor.  Each of the students will be assigned to a class/age group of their choosing at the AFNORTH Elementary School and will work directly under the guidance and supervision of the class teacher.  They will interact directly with the children in a variety of ways such as reading to the children in small groups or to the whole class.  They may be assigned to oversee the children as they go through different activity centers in the classroom.  They may be asked to work with small groups of children needing extra help with a task.  They may also be involved with the children in the playground.  Additionally, they may also be occasionally tasked with the preparation of class materials.

COURSE GOALS/OBJECTIVES/STANDARDS: Upon completion of the 9-week rotation:

·        Students should be able to assess the roles and responsibilities expected of a mentor.

·        They should have a better understanding and appreciation of the developmental level of the particular age group of the children they have chosen to mentor.

·        They would have a better understanding of themselves to ascertain whether an occupation dealing with children would be something they would want for themselves in the future.

CONTINUOUS SCHOOL PROGRESS:  AFNORTH International Middle/High School’s CSP (Continuous School Progress) goal is, All students will improve their written communication skills across the curriculum.” The 6 + 1 trait is the model selected to improve school-wide writing in all subject areas. The 6+1 Trait writing framework is a powerful way to learn and use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing as well as establish a common vision of what “strong” writing looks like. Teachers and students will use the 6+1 Trait model to identify areas of strength and weakness as they continue to strive towards continued writing improvement. Success of all students requires that the 6 + 1 Trait become a consistent and integral component of each course taught at AFNORTH International Middle/High School.

Students will be responsible for completing two pieces of writing during the 9 week Peer Mentoring class, using the 6 Traits + 1 writing process. At mid-quarter , a 6 Traits + 1 writing lesson will be presented along with sample essays for the students to view.  Also at  mid-quarter, a one paragraph “reflective” essay will be completed by the students in which they will share their experiences and questions concerning their mentorship.   The final exam for the class will be a “Thank You” letter written by the student, to the teacher of their mentoring class.  Students will be given written instructions and guidelines to follow for the final paper.  Both writing assignments will be written following the 6 Traits + 1 writing model.

COURSE GRADING/ASSESSMENT: There are no tests, quizzes, or exams in this course.  The final grade will be based on attendance (50%), a “thank you” letter written by the student, using the 6 Traits + 1 writing model (25%), and an evaluation from the elementary classroom teacher (25%).

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS/CONSEQUENCES: Students are expected to abide by all rules and regulations set forth in the Student Handbook.  They are expected to arrive in the assigned class fully ready to participate.  Respect for the elementary classroom teacher, the elementary classroom aide, classmates, and the students mentored are expected at all times.
