AFNORTH International School Lion

GIFTED PROGRAM

Gifted Education at AFNorth International Middle/High School is being implemented with the academic school year 2003-2004 in compliance with DODDS Regulation 2590.1. Gifted Education replaces enrichment programs.  A process of identifying gifted students has been established by referral in one of three ways through:

ü    screening with Terra Nova scores

ü    nominations from teachers, counselors or other school staff, parents, or students themselves

ü    transfer records which indicate gifted identification from other DoDEA schools. Students whose records from schools outside of DoDEA indicate eligibility are recommended for immediate review.

Once a student is referred, the Gifted Review Committee is responsible for determining student eligibility, based on a review of the student’s assessment profile. Assessment of each referred student is completed with parent or guardian permission. The committee meets quarterly and as needed with new student referrals.  Consideration is given to students gifted in traditional as well as nontraditional ways.

Several choices are available for gifted students in grades seven through twelve.

In grades seven and eight at the Middle School level, gifted students may accelerate in Math with Algebra and Geometry and in Foreign Languages.  Differentiation exists in the core classes of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science, where students participate in The Jason Project and an online NASA program. Original research is possible during study trips to Crete (seventh grade), Amsterdam (eighth grade), and the Heerlan Heide; original design takes place at Six Flags in Holland. Extracurricular activities, such as Math Counts, are also available at the Middle School.

Several options are offered at the high school level, grades nine through twelve. The Advanced Placement program constitutes the core of the gifted program at AFNorth.  Differentiation is embedded in Honors English at the ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades and in other courses.   Math acceleration is available, with courses which prepare a student for Advanced Placement Calculus.
